Railways to set up new track machines periodic overhaul maintenance unit at Kanchrapara

The Indian railways are setting a complete track machines maintenance facility at Kanchrapara, near Kolkata, on the Sealdah division. The facility, which is in the process of getting constructed will be the first of its kind on the Eastern zone of Indian Railways.

The project, which is on schedule, will cater to the maintenance requirements of wide portfolio of track machines available with Eastern, East Coast, North Eastern Frontier and South Eastern Railway. Earlier the machines, consisting a fleet of tamping machines ( including Express tampers), CSM, MPT, Unimat, ballast cleaning machines, shoulder ballast cleaning machines, DGS, PQRS and UTVs from the concerned zones were sent to Rynapadu in South or Allahabad for their periodic overhaul. This delayed the availability of the units in the zones, known for its extensive passenger and freight rail co effecienct.

Eastern Zonal Railways possesses close to forty eight track machines

The new facility with one 10 tons and two five tons EOT cranes, will house welding shop for carrying out necessary repairs of the bogies, underframe, superstructure. The facility will be possessing milling, wheel profiling and welding machines. Besides, it will also have facilities to carry out maintenance for pneumatic, Railways to set up new track machines periodic overhaul maintenance unit at Kanchrapara Railways Review Report and electrical parts of the track machines. Eastern Railways possesses an active fleet of forty eight track machines, comprising a mix of tamping, shoulder ballast cleaning, stabilization machines among others. SER, EcOR, NFRLY also possess similar number of units. On an average 24 track machines are expected to be overhauled in the new facility.
